Why films look different: the 24 frames secret

Two recordings of the same scene can look entirely different, and the usual explanation — a better camera — is wrong. The thing that most often separates something that feels like cinema from something that feels like a live broadcast is frame rate.

What 24, 30 and 60 fps mean

Frames per second is how many still images are recorded each second. At 24 frames there is slightly more motion blur between images; at 60 there is almost none. More frames means a sharper, more immediate picture — and that is precisely why it does not feel cinematic.

Why 24 fps feels special

Cinema has been shot at 24 frames for a century, so our minds have learned to associate that specific motion with story, staging and something made deliberately. The slight blur is not a defect; it is the signal that what we are watching has been composed rather than captured.

Why 60 fps does not look like film

At 60 frames every movement is crisp, which the eye reads as reality rather than narrative — the look of sport, live streams and camera footage. For a brand film that is usually the wrong register: it makes a considered message feel like a recording of an event.

What you should know about 24 fps

  • It works everywhere. Every modern device and platform plays 24 frames without issue.
  • It needs light. Lower frame rates work with slower shutter speeds, so lighting has to be controlled.
  • It is not for everything. Fast sport, machinery and anything to be slowed down later needs more frames.
  • It cannot be fixed afterwards. Converting 60 to 24 in the edit does not create the same feel.

When 24 frames is not enough

If the plan includes slow motion, the material has to be filmed at 60 or more and slowed down in post. The same applies to sport, production lines and anything where the viewer needs to see a fast movement clearly. In practice we mix: the narrative at 24, the specific inserts at higher rates.

Our approach

We film at 24 frames by default, because almost all of our work is brand communication rather than documentation. The exceptions are deliberate and planned before the shoot, not decided in the edit.

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 fps video higher quality than 24?

It is sharper in motion, not better. For brand communication 24 frames usually looks more considered; 60 suits sport and live recording.

Which frame rate should we use for Instagram or TikTok?

24 or 30 frames is fine — the format and the first seconds matter far more than the frame rate on those platforms.

Why does video shot on my phone look cheaper than a film?

Usually because of lighting, uncontrolled colour and a high frame rate, not the lens. A phone at 24 frames in good light can look surprisingly close.
