Three years of business networking: what it returned

We have renewed our membership of a business networking organisation for the third year. This is not a recommendation — it is an account of what it actually returned, and who it does not suit.

1. The investment returned fifteen times over

Measured in signed work against the cost of membership and the mornings spent, the return over three years is roughly fifteen to one. Almost none of it came in the first months; it came once the group could describe precisely what we do.

2. Connections that are worth something

The value is not the business card but the fact that thirty people can recommend you accurately. A recommendation from someone who has watched you work for two years carries more weight than any advertisement.

3. Public speaking becomes normal

A weekly sixty-second presentation to the same audience is the most effective speaking practice we have found. It transfers directly to being comfortable in front of a camera — which matters in our line of work.

4. Indirect business

Some of the work arrived through people who never used our services themselves. They simply knew what we did and mentioned it at the right moment.

5. A constant creative exercise

Explaining the same service in a different way each week forces clarity. Most of our website copy came out of that exercise.

6. Articles come out of presentations

Every presentation is the draft of a future article or video script. Several of the pieces published in national media began as sixty seconds in front of a business group.

7. Solid material for social media

Business events produce the kind of footage a company cannot stage: real rooms, real reactions, real conversations.

Who it does not suit

Honestly: membership is not cheap and it does not return anything by itself. It does not work for people who come only to listen, who do not prepare their presentation, or who treat the meetings as another calendar entry. For the first few months there is almost nothing to show — our first enquiries arrived once people knew exactly what we did.

It works for those with a service that can be recommended in one sentence, and for whom long-term trust matters more than a single transaction. In video production that is obvious: people commission filming from someone they know, not from whoever is cheapest.

What a business can take from this, even without joining

  • One message — if you cannot explain what you do in sixty seconds, nobody will recommend you.
  • Regularity — the same people seeing you every week remember you when it matters.
  • Content material — every presentation is the script of a future film.
  • Speaking practice — it changes how you feel in front of a camera.

So this piece about networking is really about the same thing as all of our work: trust grows through repeated, intelligible appearances, not through one bright flash.

Frequently asked questions

Does it suit someone working alone?

It does, if your service is recommended on personal trust — photographers, video producers, lawyers, trades. For low-cost retail it is far less effective.

How long before results appear?

Realistically six to nine months. The first enquiries come when the group knows exactly who to recommend you to.
